Egg donation – What is it?

After more IVF cycles with negative results, doctors could suggest the possibility of egg donation, moreover this treatment can be suitable for women up to 40 years old, with a reduced ovarian reserve, in case of a genetic disease or in menopause.

But what does egg donation consist of? The oocytes are donated by a young donor, aged between 20 and 35, and fertilized in vitro with the partner's or donor's sperm. The embryos that are formed are transferred to the recipient's uterus.

Using oocytes of young women greatly increases the success rate and decreases the risk of genetic diseases in the fetus, the treatment can be done with "fresh" or vitrified oocytes. In any case the pregnancy that is established is identical to a natural pregnancy
